In January 2006, Steve Snider Construction Inc. was honoured nationally for constructing the most energy-efficient house in Canada.

The 2006 Outstanding Energy Efficiency Award, presented by the Cement Association of Canada, for an environmentally friendly home, was one of five presented by the cement association during the Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s national conference in Lake Louise, Alta.

The energy award recognized the builder whose insulated concrete form (ICF), R2000-certified home had achieved the highest energy efficiency rating. The award was for a three-bedroom, 4,100-square-foot bungalow Snider built near Uxbridge. The home featured a NextEnergy Geothermal heating system, which is twice as efficient as a natural gas furnace. Coils, buried two metres underground, draw heat from below the frost line to help provide heating in winter and cooling in summer. The home’s other innovations included ICF construction, a high-efficiency heat-recovery ventilator, radiant floor heating in the basement, low-E argon windows, energy-efficient lighting and a maintenance-free exterior constructed mainly of brick and stone. Inside, low or no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and finishes were used. The house was rated at 89 on the EnerGuide scale and beat the R-2000 target by 43 per cent.

A busy building season ahead!

ONTARIO HOME STARTS GROW IN MARCH

Toronto, April 8 2011. Ontario preliminary Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) of home starts across urban* centres grew for a third consecutive month in March. An estimated 71,900 residential housing units broke ground, up from 63,300 units in February. Higher density construction, led by the apartment sector, drove housing starts activity. The single detached construction sector however posted modest declines in the latest month. Urban markets specializing in ground oriented construction posted declines from this time last year while losing pace against higher density urban communities. For the year ending March, new home construction in Ontario urban areas is running 12 percent above levels for the same period one year ago.

“Ontario new home starts activity has strengthened ahead of schedule largely driven by more construction of apartment units,” said Ted Tsiakopoulos, CMHC`s Regional Economist. “Tighter rental markets, higher mortgage carrying costs and less land available for single detached construction suggests high density construction will be the key story for 2011,” added Tsiakopoulos.
